Henry A. Janvier was an engineer with the Ferracute Machine Company of Bridgeton, N.J., where he had begun work in 1877 as a sixteen-year old apprentice. The Ferracute presses which had been installed in the United States Mint in Philadelphia had attracted international attention. Sometime in 1896 Ferracute signed a contract with the Chinese government to build three mints in China. Two of these were to be located at Wuchang in Hopei Province and one in Chengtu in Szechwan. The Ferracute Machine Company was formed by inventor Oberlin Smith in Bridgeton, New Jersey in 1863, incorporated in 1877, and ceased operations in 1968. The company specialized in metal forming and cutting presses, originally focused on the tin can industry but later covering the entire range of pressed and stamped metal products.
